Clayhidon Art Group

Report for Clayhidon Parish Council

April 2019

Once again I can report that our art group has had a successful year with an influx of new members. Sadly though, one of our founding members, Bob Brien, has moved away from the area. We will miss him greatly and wish him well in his new abode.

A particular success this year was the granting of an award of £500 from Devon County Council. These funds will be used to contribute to a project that we have undertaken to celebrate and commemorate the Camden Group artists who visited Clayhidon in the early 20th century. Our aim is to establish a collection of materials which can be used to stage local exhibitions.  The collection will include historical information on the Camden Group, representations of their work, and contemporary works by members of our group. So far, we have spent around £470 of the grant money on a large concertina display screen, four free standing display easels and four table top display easels. The remaining £30 is to be spent on storage boxes.

We would particularly like to thank Councillor Ray Radford for authorising this grant and to the Devon County Council staff and Parish Council members who facilitated this arrangement.

Our group meet on Tuesday mornings at the village hall from 1000 to 1200hrs. Membership is open to all, regardless of their artistic ability. We have a mix of accomplished artists and novices.

Usually everyone works on their own projects, at their own pace, with their own materials. We do not run art classes but from time to time we have had input from professional tutors. We rely on one another for advice, support and encouragement. For those who might like a little more structure, we often have a theme for each month which members can follow if they wish. The themes focus attention on a specific artist or a particular technique.  Everyone brings along materials such as books and prints relating to the theme. We then try to produce something in that style.

We spend most of the year working in the village hall.  However, we do venture outside during the summer when we have suitable weather.  These outside sessions are at local venues. From time to time, we have held small exhibitions to support local events and raise funds for charities.

We would love to welcome new members. Membership costs just £8 per month which is largely used to cover hall rental fees If you are interested please contact me on 01823 421200.

Whatever your level of ability, come along and join us.

Bill Smith.
